Signs and Portents is a visual storytelling and light writing project I’ve been brainstorming for some time and now it’s time to start publishing bit by bit in the hopes I’ll finally some ideas into something solid and get in some much needed practice crafting and creating things you might see in a near future where rouge technological elements roam rampant, strange beast and creatures are as common in a city as a common pigeon or squirrel and people must prepare for cosmic and network storms like rain is on the horizon.
Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the two organizations found in this world and keep an eye out for the signs and warnings. Stay alert and keep them in mind, the world you knew is changing and you may be in danger.
National Park Cryptozoology Service (NPCS) – Department of Cryptozoological Defense (DCD)
The first organization, a joint effort of the US Department of Interior and US Forestry service the National Park Cryptozoology Service (NPCS) was created to monitor and study abnormal and often otherworldly creatures. The service was praised early on for its scientific and conservational efforts however became criticized heavily for its inability to respond to requests for assistance in capturing and controlling the more violent and disruptive creatures that were being reported in the most rural and increasingly in more urban environments. Although lack of foresight for the need of the service to expand into security services and budgetary restraints was to blame the service was changed almost overnight with overwhelming congressional, new funding and manpower from the departments of Homeland Security and the FBI. The NPCS was renamed into the Department of Cryptozoological Defense (DCD) and its new mission was focused on public safety, investigation and armed intervention. Many of the old veteran members of the NPCS still despise the DCD influence and try to hold onto the old vision of conservation and a peaceful co-existence with these creatures but cannot ignore the frequency of incidents and more problematic creatures are rapidly on the rise nationwide.
The National Cyber Service (NCS)
With cheaper and more efficient internet devices and services, higher demand for smart products and the rapid distribution and development of simplified tools to create artificial intelligence the new digital age is highly personalized, powerful and evolving by the second on a person to person basis. This new evolved global network and its digital climate began to function much like the climate and atmospheric conditions of the world adjusting, changing and evolving with and without human interference. Modeled after the national weather and oceanic and atmospheric services the U.S Department of Commerce commissioned a new branch, The National Cyber Service for the purpose of monitoring and predicting the flow of data for the financial success and network traffic stability of the United States. After the events of the West Coast Static Cyber Storm, the NCS’s goals and mission was quickly revised to emphasize public and national safety. The new NCS now with additional support from the US CYBERCOM now predicts and tracks network anomalies such as cyber storms, dangerous network viruses, rouge and rampant AI threats.
